It isn't always possible to download these Xcode Command Line Tools, following these steps, on Mac’s running older operating systems.

The Safari 14 update, which has been made available to macOS Mojave users ahead of the macOS Big Sur public release — which comes with the new Safari pre-installed — has also made Apple’s browser stop working for some users.

Creating an Xcode C++ Project

Xcode is designed to support developers of large systems, so touse it as we will initially to write simple one-file programs may seemlike overkill. However, over time you will come to appreciate somefeatures (the debugger, especially).

Here is a way to set up an Xcode project to compile and run asimple one-file program. A number of these steps may have alternateways to achieve the same end.

  1. Start up the Xcode IDE (Integrated Development Environment).

  2. Select File / New / Project.... You will be asked to choose a templatefor your new project. Select the macOS tab (or OS X), and in the Applicationgroup, select Command Line Tool. Click Next.

  3. Pick a name for your project as the Product Name, such as 'hello'. ForOrganization Name, anything will do. For Organization Identifier, somethingsimple like 'UCLA' is good. For Language, select C++. Click Next.

  4. Select the folder in which you want your project folder to be created. ClickCreate.

  5. In the left frame, click once on the name main.cpp to openthe file, which already has some sample code in it. Click once again on thename to rename the file to what you want it to be, such ashello.cpp. Click outside the text box to effect the namechange. Replace the sample code in the edit frame with:

  6. From the main menu, select View / Debug Area / Activate Console.

  7. In the upper left corner, click the Run right-facing triangle to build andrun your program.

  8. If your program has any compilation or link errors, you'll be notified.Click on the little red octagon icon in the status line near the top ofthe window to see the errors. Fix the errors. Go back to step 7.

  9. If your program built successfully, your output will appear in the Outputframe (bottom right below the edit frame). The line Program ended withexit code: 0 is produced by the Xcode environment, not by you; wewill never consider it to be part of the output of your program.
